Odbc Error 193 Windows 7

I was helping a customer the other day with their computer and they mentioned that they could not get ITunes to open anymore. Since they were using iTunes to sync music and pictures to their iPad it was vital that iTunes worked. When they tried opening it, the following error message appeared:

You receive the following system error code 193 when using the Microsoft ODBC Administrator to create the DataSource for Tivoli Netcool / OMNIbus on Windows 64-bit: The setup routines for the DataDirect 5.3 ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 193. Try You need to download the JDBC driver and set the correct path.

iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows Error 193).

ODBC-call failed: MicrosoftSQL Server Native Client 11.0TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (#10054) MicrosoftSQL Server Native Client 11.0Communication link failure (#10054).

As I started to examine their computer it was obvious that there was a lot of file corruption causing not only iTunes to not function but most other programs would not work correctly either. The Error 193 in fact refers to an error in Windows instead of an error within iTunes.

Mysql-connector-odbc-5.3.6-win32 requires: Visual C 2013 Redistributeable x86 (aka 32bit) (for 32-bit programs to connect to a 32-bit ODBC data source) For ODBC 64-bit data sources: mysql-connector-odbc-5.3.6-winx64 requires – Visual C 2013 Redistributable x64 (aka 64bit) (for 64-bit programs to connect to a 64-bit ODBC data source). In few occasions the error code is either 193 or 106. Note: This issue is applicable to full client and other lower versions as well.

Here are the steps I took to fix the error and get iTunes working again on the PC.

1) Click on Start

2) Click on All Programs

3) Click on Accessories

4) Right-click on the Command Prompt option and choose Run as Administrator

5) When the command prompt opens type

CHKDSK /F

6) Sit back and relax while the system checks the hard drive for errors and fixes them. In some cases, there will be a message that the filesystem is locked and a chkdsk cannot be performed at this time. Do you wish to run CHKDSK on a restart? Say Yes to this and then restart the computer for CHKDSK to run.

7) After completing a CHKDSK and fixing any drive errors, try opening Itunes again. If it opens successfully, then you are done. If it does not start, then you’ll need to reinstall Itunes. In this case download the latest version of Itunes from the link below to your desktop and reinstall it.

In most cases, after fixing the hard drive errors and reinstalling iTunes the problem should be solved and iTunes should open normally.
